Peace Tree Day was proclaimed for the first time on June 1st 2009 in the City of Brampton by Mayor Susan Fennell. Four hundred Peace Tree Ambassadors attended Peace Tree Day from six schools in the area and were able to raise $1,080 for War Child Canada and Free the Children through their peace and diversity workshops.
In Toronto, Peace Tree Ambassadors created a Peace Tree Stand and made chaat for guests, a delicious Indian snack of yogurt, potatoes, chick peas with small papris (similar to tortillas and chips) and tamarind sauce. They also sold drinks from different cultures and shared games like Fishing for Peace, the Chopsticks Challenge and learned a Bollywood dance routine to Jai Ho. Toronto Peace Tree Ambassadors raised $350 for Free the Children.
