In June 2018, the Toronto Peace Tree Ambassadors organized Peace Tree Day for the children at rEcess. rEcess is a once-per-month respite program in Etobicoke, that offers free care to special needs children and their siblings while parents enjoy an afternoon out. It was a very inspiring and magical day for everyone, as the Peace Tree Ambassadors shared peace and diversity workshops with the children who are physically challenged.
Peace Tree Day began with a Bharatnatyam/Chinese Fusion Dance performed by Aiishwariya and accompanied by Priyana on the piano, who sang 'Why Can't We Share the Same Earth?' The Peace Tree Ambassadors conducted seven student led workshops for the children, who were delighted to learn new and exciting forms of art, music, dance and stories from around the world.
The workshops consisted of Indigenous Dot Painting, Origami4Peace, Peace Tree Trivia, Mehndhi Art, Dance Fusion, Anti-Bullying, and the Peace Tree Corner, where students were able to create their own Peace Tree symbols of different cultures and faiths for the first Peace Tree at rEcess. The children were delighted to explore diversity and try new forms of art, dance, games and stories.
The event was organized by Peace Tree Ambassador, Talina, who did a wonderful job coordinating all the workshop leaders, gathering the materials and corresponding with rEcess in order to bring a unique and very important experience to the children.
Thanks to the support of TDCanadaTrust and to all the children, volunteers, the staff at rEcess and the Peace Tree Ambassadors, who enlighted the children with the colours of diversity at this very special event.
